Circle IV
Overview

Dante's Fourth Circle is the home of the Hoarders and Wasters, and it gets scant attention from him. Only part of his Canto VII deals with it before moving on the next realm. The first character that Dante and Virgil meet in this realm is Plutus, formerly the Greek god of Wealth, and according to the experts, a combination of that God with Pluto, lord of the Underworld. (When Plutus approaches Dante and Virgil he jabbers incoherently at them in a rage. Virgil's immediate silencing of him with a wave of the hand reminded me too much of a similar, famous  "mind trick" not to pay homage to it in my version.)

In The Infernova, it is the home to those that advanced Fallacies of Rebuttal. Here, the figure of Plutus is replaced by a general blithering Idiot, (has the adjective 'blithering' ever modified any noun other than 'idiot'?) the personification of any and all that attempt to bully, deride, or attack their way through an "argument." He is the issuer of slurs and character attacks, and in my mind's eye, he looks an awful lot like a certain bloat radio personality that is no stranger to clever name-calling (or not-so-clever--after all, he came up with "Femi-Nazi").
